Nicolaus Copernicus Nicolaus Copernicus was born in 1473 in Poland to a family of merchants and municipal officals. Copernicus later moved in with his uncle Bishop Lukasz Watzenrode. It was not published until the 19th century . Copernicus took part in the Fifth Laterian Council commission on calendar reform in 1515. Then he began his major work when he published a book on the Revolution of Celestial Spheres,Which was finished in1530. Just before Copernicus's death in1543. Cosmology was replaced by the Copernican theory in which he stated that the Earth rotates daily on its axis and revolves yearly around the sun. What exactly is style, though? It can be tough to pin down, because there are a variety of things we might be looking at when we talk about style. In most cases, though, style is about the individual word choices and the structure of sentences. While an author might have particular character-types that s/he tends to use, or a penchant for complicated plots, those things are usually considered on a different level from style. Two Examples of Style You can see style at work in even a short excerpt from a piece of writing. For instance, compare these two passages, which come from two websites’ â€Å"About† pages: We started innocent in 1999 after selling our smoothies at a music festival. We put up a big sign asking people if they thought we should give up our jobs to make smoothies, and put a bin saying Yes and a bin saying No in front of the stall. Then we got people to vote with their empties. At the end of the weekend, the Yes bin was full, so we resigned from our jobs the next day and got cracking. (From â€Å"us†, Innocent.) Established in 1981, Infosys is a NYSE listed global consulting and IT services company with more than 209,000 employees. From a capital of US$250, we have grown to become a US$11.12 billion (LTM Q1 FY19 revenues) company with a market capitalization of approximately US$ 42.4 billion. (From â€Å"About Us†, Infosys.) Both of these excerpts tell us about the respective companies’ beginnings. But they not only focus on different things (and as we’ll see in a minute, you can’t completely divorce content from style), they’re written in very different language. Formal vs Informal Style Even if we look at the first four words of each piece, we can see the difference in style: â€Å"We started innocent in† â€Å"Established in 1981, Infosys† We can tell that one of these passages will use a much more formal style than the other: â€Å"Started† is a simpler word than â€Å"established†; â€Å"innocent† doesn’t capitalise their name (a hallmark of very informal style); the innocent piece is in the first person (â€Å"we†) whereas the Infosys piece is in the third person (â€Å"Infosys†). Throughout the excerpts, the content is also quite different: innocent give us a story about how their company began, whereas Infosys focus on facts and figures. Tip: If you need to make your writing more informal, use shorter sentences, simpler words, and write as if you’re talking directly to the reader. To make your writing more formal, use more precise, complex words, as if you’re writing a company report. Formal vs informal is one way of looking at style – but there are plenty of other ways in which you might describe the style of a piece of writing. Concise vs Detailed Some writing is to-the-point: it gives information succinctly, and moves on. Other pieces are much more verbose – they tell a story, paint a scene, take their time. Neither style is â€Å"better† – they serve different purposes. A news report about a local incident – say, a lost child who was found unharmed – would be much shorter than a novel that deals with similar subject matter. Or compare a tweet on a particular topic with a blog post on the same topic: the tweet is much shorter than the blog post, but both might well be valuable in different ways. Tip: To be more concise, cut out extra details and unnecessary words. To expand a short piece, look for ways to give (relevant or interesting) detail, or offer a more nuanced perspective by looking at different angles on the topic. Commercial vs Literary In fiction, one major stylistic divide is between â€Å"literary† novels and â€Å"commercial† novels. As with formal vs informal, we could see this as a spectrum – with the most literary novels at one end, and the most commercial at the other end. Literary fiction places much more importance on writing style than commercial fiction, where the point of â€Å"style† is usually to get the story across as smoothly as possible. The content can also be quite different: literary fiction tends to be less plot-driven and more focused on character, for instance. Commercial fiction tends to sell much better, though some literary authors like Margaret Atwood and Ian McEwan sell a lot of books, too. Tip: As Harvey Chapman from Novel Writing Help puts it, â€Å"Literary novels generally sell in smaller quantities than genre or mainstream novels. This means publishers are less likely to take a gamble on them, but you shouldn’t let that put you off writing them. Always write the type of book that you want to write.† Factual vs Opinionated Another way to look at style is to think about the type of statements being made. Are they facts, or opinions? (Generally, a writer focused on facts will be more dispassionate and one focused on opinions will be more impassioned in their language – though there are exceptions.) News articles, for instance, tend to focus on facts – they may well be biased, of course, and the underlying political or social leanings of a publication can show through in the facts they choose to include or omit. Columnists in newspapers, however, are free to be much more opinionated – even, in some cases, potentially offensive. They can share their thoughts and ideas with little or no recourse to actual facts. Tip: As a writer and a reader, it’s important to be able to distinguish between facts and opinions. Facts are objective and can be proved (e.g. â€Å"water is denser than air†); opinions are subjective and two people might have two opposing opinions (e.g. â€Å"swimming is horrible† vs â€Å"swimming is wonderful†). If you’re trying to convince your reader of something – perhaps through a blog post or an article – then it’s fine to give strong opinions, but you should also aim to back up what you’re saying with specific facts. As a writer, you already have a natural writing style – though you may decide you want to develop or modify it. You might want to think about: How formal or informal do you want your writing to be? This might vary in different contexts – for instance, if you’re a freelancer, you might write for some publications that want a very chatty, laid-back style, and others that want a business-like style. Do you tend to be a concise or verbose writer? Perhaps you find that you naturally get your points across quickly and briefly – or maybe you like to dig deep into a topic and give lots of details. This could affect the type of writing you want to do (e.g. short stories vs novels, or blog posts vs books). If you write fiction, are you aiming at the commercial or literary end of the market? Don’t feel that you â€Å"should† do one or the other – focus on what appeals to you as a writer. If you’re unsure, you might want to try writing short stories in a variety of styles. Are there particular hallmarks of your style that you’ve already noted? For instance, perhaps you tend to use quite colourful language, or you love complex sentence structures. You might also want to look closely at the style of authors you enjoy: how exactly do they use words, phrases and sentences to create particular effects? August Wilson's Pittsburgh Cycle After writing his third play, August Wilson realized he was developing something quite monumental. He had created three different plays set in three different decades, detailing the hopes and struggles of African-Americans. In the early 1980s, he decided that he wanted to create a cycle of ten plays, one play for each decade. Collectively, they would become known as the Pittsburgh Cycle - all but one take place in the citys Hills District. August Wilsons 10 play series is arguably one of the finest literary achievements in contemporary drama. Although they were not created in chronological order, here is a brief synopsis of each play, organized by the decade each one represents. Note: Each of the links connects to an informative New York Times review. Gem Of the Ocean Set in 1904, a young African-American named Citizen Barlow, like many others traveling north in the years after the Civil War arrives in Pittsburgh in search of purpose, prosperity, and redemption. A woman named Aunt Ester, who is rumored to be 285 years old and possess healing powers, decides to help the young man on his life’s journey. Joe Turner’s Come and Gone The title warrants a bit of historical context - Joe Turner was the name of a plantation owner who, in spite of the emancipation proclamation, forced African-Americans to work in his fields. In contrast, Seth and Bertha Holly’s boarding house offers room and nourishment to wayward souls who have been mistreated, abused, and sometimes even kidnapped by members of white society. The play takes place in the year 1911. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom As four African-American blues musicians wait for Ma Rainey, the famous lead singer of their band, they exchange off-the-cuff jokes and cutting-edge barbs. When the blues diva does arrive, the tensions continue to mount, pushing the group towards its breaking point. The tone is a combination of bitterness, laughter, and the blues, an ideal representation of the black experience during the late 1920s. The Piano Lesson A piano that has been handed down for generations becomes the source of conflict for members of the Charles family. Set in 1936, the storyline reflects the significance of objects in relationship to the past. This play garnered August Wilson his second Pulitzer Prize. Seven Guitars Touching upon the theme of music once again, this drama begins with the death of guitarist Floyd Barton in 1948. Then, the narrative shifts to the past, and the audience witnesses the protagonist in his younger days, ultimately leading up to his demise. Fences Perhaps Wilson’s most renowned work, Fences explores the life and relationships of Troy Maxson, an activist-minded trash collector, and former baseball hero. The protagonist represents the struggle for justice and fair treatment during the 1950s. This moving drama earned Wilson his first Pulitzer Prize. Two Trains Running This multiple award-winning drama is set in Pittsburgh 1969, in the height of the battle for civil rights. In spite of the political and social change that sweeps through the nation, many of the characters of this play are too cynical, too down-trodden to experience hope for the future or rage for the ongoing tragedies. Jitney Set in a cab driver’s station during the boisterous late 1970s, this character-driven play features sharp-witted, hustling co-workers who gossip, argue, and dream in between jobs. King Hedley II Often thought of as the bitterest and most tragic of Wilson’s cycle, the play focuses on the downfall of the prideful ex-con protagonist, King Hedley II (the son of one of the characters from Seven Guitars). The mid-1980s setting finds Wilson’s beloved Hills District in a dismal, poverty-stricken neighborhood. Radio Golf With this 1990s setting, the final play in the cycle tells the story of affluent Harmond Wilks, a successful politician and real estate developer - who considers tearing down a historic old house that once belonged to none other than Aunt Ester. Even though this sector was working with excess capacity, the government considered this action to be the correct one (Goodstadt 2011). In 2009 as well, China underwent its own real estate bubble. Land; is this a good enough reason for the mistreatment of Native Americans? Invading their lands, killing their people, breaking treaties, sending them to reservations; all this for land? The U.S. government has done many cruel and unfair things in the past, but this must rank among one of the most. It is through their sufferings and misfortunes that Native Americans are entitled to compensation from the U.S. government. Native Americans had been an old culture in America 2000 years ago. The first British settlers, the Jackson Administration, and the Westward expansion had no right to remove the Native Americans from their land. Nor did they have the right to attack Native Americans and start wars against them for land. What if aliens from another planet were to come to take over Earth because they needed our land and resources? How would we react and feel?In the process of taking their lands, Native Americans were highly discriminated against and mistreated. They were forced out of their lands, sometimes without a notice in advance, and had to take long journeys to reservations unprepared. An example of this harsh treatment was when President Jackson in the 1820’s demanded the removal of the Cherokee from their homeland in Georgia and sent them to reservations in Oklahoma and Arkansas. Their journey from their homeland to the reservations was known as the â€Å"Trail of Tears† in which 4,000 died of starvation, disease, or exposure. As if being relocated once from their homelands to reservations isn’t bad enough, Native Americans were often forced out of reservations and pushed even farther West due to broken treaties by the U.S government and expansion. The government was unfair in most of its treaties and often did not follow through with them. The Dawes Act, for example, gave each family 160 acres of land to cultivate and after a probation period of 25 years, Native Americans would be granted ownership of land and United States Citizenship. The problem with this act was that the Native Americans were nomads and therefore could not stay at a given area for a long period of time because their source of food, buffalo, was on the constant move. The U.S. government knew this and knew that the Native Americans could not stay there for 25 years, once again setting them up. In the past 200 years, Native Americans have been stripped of their land, rights, and dignity. They have witnessed the deaths of their own brothers and sisters and have become a minority in the U.S. today. They were once a proud nation of people, but today they have the highest suicide rate and lowest life expectancy. This is all in part thanks to the U.S. government and Native Americans are entitled to compensation.

The comparison of the two Doritos ads comes from 1970’s Card Shark commercial and the 2010 Super Bowl commercial showing a little boy telling her moms date not to touch momma or his Doritos. Both commercial show a conflict that happens between the main players in the ads. The main comparison that you see is the race of the actors. As I reviewed the 1970’s ads I could not find any that were racially equal with the cast members. I in the 1970’s thirty second Doritos ad with in the first nine seconds you know what this commercial is selling Doritos. The opening seen the main actor is setting at a table well dressed in a suit playing cards with three other gentlemen. At about seven or eight seconds into the thirty second commercial and you still can not tell with the product is being sold. The lighting in the room behind the main actor appears dark, with one lady in a red dress and two other actors coming down steps the rest of the room does not appear to be notable because of the like of lighting darkness of the furniture and walls. Imagine driving home with your family, after enjoying a nice night out of dinner and a movie. All of a sudden you see flashing lights and are being pulled over by a police officer. Your children are asking what’s wrong and why you are pulling over, and you are wondering the same thing. S. government effort to wipe out Mexicans after the Bracero Program, a labor exchange program, which had brought thousands of Mexicans to work legally in agriculture. According to the Encyclopedia of Immigration and Migration in the American West, â€Å"in attempting to execute Operation Wetback, police and Border Patrol agents swept through Latino neighborhoods interrogating and otherwise harassing Americans of Mexicans descent or anyone who ‘looked Mexican. † Racial profiling in the past didn’t only involve Latinos but other races and ethnic groups as well. S. selection for scrutiny by law enforcement based on race or ethnicity rather than on behavioral or evidentiary criteria; discrimination or stereotyping on racial or ethnic grounds. People are sometimes judged by their race or ethnicity because of what others of the same race or ethnicity have done. What gives us the right to judge someone just because of their race or their ethnic background? Everyone should be treated the same no matter what ethnic background they come from. We all know that Middle Eastern persons were responsible for the attacks on September 11th, but that was only a specific group of them. Just because some people did this, it does not mean that the whole race has the same intentions. Let’s say A is a certain race and B is another. When a certain number of people of A perform a significant, heinous act towards B, should others in A be judged the same way? No, not all people are going to be the same. Daily, people are judged because of the color of their skin, where they came from, or their religious beliefs. One example of racial profiling that is fairly recent is the law that was enacted in Arizona. The law states that state and local law enforcement are required  to reasonably attempt to determine the immigration status of a person involved in a lawful stop, detention or arrest in the enforcement of any other local or state law or ordinance where reasonable suspicion exists that the person is an alien  and is unlawfully present, except if it may hinder or obstruct an investigation (Morse). This is pretty uch saying that if there is a person who looks like they can be an illegal immigrant, they may be asked for papers proving their citizenship when stopped for an illegal action, i. e. traffic violation, parole violation, etc. Although, the law also states that law enforcement cannot consider race, color, or national origin when implementing these provisions, except as permitted by the U. S. or Arizona Constitution (Morse). If the officers aren’t allowed to consider race, they should be asking all people, when stopped, for proof of citizenship. Most, if not all, unauthorized immigrants along the U. S. -Mexico border come from Mexico. According to a Department of Homeland Security report, in 2011 there was an estimated population of 6,800,000 Mexicans who were unauthorized immigrants. The total estimated number of unauthorized immigrants in the United States in 2011 is 11,510,000 (Hoefer). That means that the percentage of Mexicans that make up the total unauthorized immigrants is 59%. This is a very large percentage compared to all other countries that have illegally immigrated to the U. S. There is very little chance that you will see a person of Caucasian ethnicity and American background trying to sneak into the U. S. Police officers will have more of an inclination to ask residents who look of a Latin decent because of how many Mexicans come here. This is not right and this law that was enacted in Arizona is racially profiling most Mexicans as illegal aliens. It is not fair to those who have legally come here and have the right to stay. On September 11, the world witnessed one of the most heinous acts committed against the U. S. Nineteen Arab men hijacked four planes and aimed them at major civilian areas. Two planes were flown towards the World Trade Center, one was flown towards the Pentagon, and the last was taken down near Shanksville, Pennsylvania (Lee). Since that day, airports have greatly tightened up there security. In response to the attacks, â€Å"Bush signed into law the Aviation and Transportation Security Act (ATSA), This act established a new Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which consolidated security efforts inside the Department of Transportation (DOT)† (Blalock 2). In the airports, the number of screening agents was increased to about 56,000 workers by the end of 2002 (Blalock 5), and the number of hours needed for training was increased from twelve to one hundred hours (Blalock 6). Along with this and more thorough baggage screenings, airport security was also able to use airport profiling. â€Å"Airport profiling ‘permits investigators to correlate a number of distinct data items in order to assess how close a person . . . comes to a predetermined characterization or model of infraction. The modal characteristics and behavior patterns of known violations . . are determined relative to the characteristics of others presumed to be non-violators’† (Macdonald 132-33). Furthermore, the only people who have hijacked airliners for the purpose of mass murder have been Arab men. So the FTSA should incorporate gender, race, and age into profiling procedures (Macdonald 134). They shouldn’t, the only people to hijack planes for mass murder of others may have been Arab men, but every one of us has an equal chance of doing the same thing. Airports are technically targeting one specific group of people because of what they did what anyone could have done. Along with Amendment XIV, â€Å"the Equal Protection Clause ‘prohibits selective enforcement of the law based on considerations such as race’ and is the ‘the constitutional basis for objecting to intentionally discriminatory application of laws’† (Macdonald 116). Racial profiling is blatantly in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment and the Equal Protection Clause and we cannot change that. This country was founded on the fact that we all wanted to be free and all to be treated equally, why should we be discriminating against others because of their ethnicity? The only people who should be targeted are those who have actually done something wrong, or those of which we have evidence to prove them to be immoral. Throughout the years, there have been several smaller incidents of racial profiling. A lot of them have been traffic stop related or minor confrontations. In May 1992, Robert Wilkins, a Harvard-trained African American attorney, was pulled over ecause he and his other family members fit the profile developed and used by Maryland State Police to uncover drug-running activity along the highway. They were male, black, and were driving a rental car. In 1993, two 15-year old Asian-American girls, Minhtran Tran and Quyen Pham, were shopping in a strip mall in Garden Grove, California. While they were leaving the mall, they were stopped by the police. The police had said that the girls were dressed in â€Å"gang attire. † The articles of clothing that they were wearing were form fitting shirts and baggy pant, what all American teens wear. The Orange County police had specifically identified Asian youth as being involved in gangs. On September 14, 2001, an Indian-American and his family members were stopped and cited for a broken taillight. The officer then began asking them questions about their nationality and had asked for their proof of citizenship. The motorist told the officer that their papers were at home and the officer replied, â€Å"You are lying. You are Arabs involved in terrorism. † He ordered all of them out of the car and he searched the vehicle. When he found a knife inside a toolbox, hand cuffed the driver and later reported that the driver â€Å"wore and carried a butcher knife, a dangerous deadly weapon, concealed upon and about his person† (Lawson 9-10). All of the people mentioned above were targeted because of their race, none of which had actually done something terribly wrong. Officers assumed that minorities were more likely than others to be involved in certain types of criminal activities. There are several types of racial profiling, â€Å"driving while Black,† being the most widely known. The case of Robert Wilkins demonstrates this. Law enforcement has viewed the black minority as being involved in illegal drug activity. Hispanics have also caught the attention of law enforcement because of their involvement in drug activity and illegal immigration. This is known as â€Å"driving while Brown. † Since September 11th, Arabs have begun to also grab the attention of law enforcement in what is called, â€Å"driving while Arab† (Lawson 11). A study in Los Angeles showed that only 10 percent of the population of LA was Blacks, but 18 percent of the traffic stops were Blacks. Broken down further, â€Å"22 percent of Blacks who were stopped were asked to step out of their cars, as compared to only seven percent of Whites stopped. Once out of their cars, 67 percent of Blacks were patted down and 85 percent subjected to a body search. Fifty-five percent of Hispanics removed from their cars were patted down and 84 percent searched. By contrast, only 50 percent of Whites were patted down and 71 percent searched† (Lawson 12). That is only in Los Angeles; there are many other cities in the U. S. that experience this kind of discrimination. Other forms of racial profiling include â€Å"stop and frisk† tactics and customs service profiling. Along with racial profiling, there are the consequences. When law enforcement stops and interrogates one based on race, and then later on the person is let go because they were found completely innocent, that can be kind of humiliating. Officers go around and stop people and happen to find the few that are criminals and they deserve to go to jail, but there are far more of those who are innocent and do not deserve to be picked out just because of their race. A 1999 Gallup Poll revealed that 42 percent of African Americans, and 72 percent of African American males between the ages of 18 and 34, believe they have been stopped by police because of their race (Lawson 19). Law enforcement has taken their privileges a little too far in just having a hunch that that man/woman may be involved in some sort of criminal activity just because others of their race tend to be criminally involved. All in all, racial profiling is not going to go away, but that still does not make it okay to practice it. There are so many more innocent people of minorities compared to the guilty. Whether it is driving while Black, Brown, or Arab, not all are going to be criminally involved. Airport security has been heightened since 9/11. Although airport profiling may make airports and flying safer, it still is not morally right. Racial profiling occurs when the police target someone for investigation on the basis of that person’s race, origin, or ethnicity. It has led police agencies across the world to start collecting information about traffic and pedestrian stops. The controversy over this is that all assumptions are race based. One example of this research states that police face the use of race to make decisions during traffic and pedestrian stops. The public is concerned that these decisions reflect racial prejudice, and racism. Many researchers continue to defend theses profiles, saying that they are based of accurate facts (Hersezenhorn, 2000; Kennedy, 1997; Taylor ;amp; Whitney, 1999). Other experts have tested the accuracy of these profiles, and still have argued that even if accurate, all decisions based off race is inappropriate (Harris, 1997, 1999a; Kennedy, 1997). There are two meanings to racial profiling. â€Å"Hard† racial profiling uses race as the only factor. E. g. an officer sees a black person and pulls him over for a search and pat-down. â€Å"Soft† racial profiling is using race as one factor among others in criminal suspiciousness. E. g. a report says that a Jamaican drug lord is driving a Jeep, so troopers pull over black males who are speeding in Jeeps. Even though the driver was speeding, the reason the officer pulled him over instead of the other cars, was due to his race. Minorities are usually the ones affected by racial profiling. According to the public, the war on drugs immediately became a war on minorities. There is evidence for racial profiling. One is anecdotal, which is a limited value. The other is statistical, which research is entirely worthless. Any evaluation of the evidence for the use of race profiling in policing must keep the contexts distinct. Today, skin color makes you a suspect in America. You are more likely to be topped, searched, be arrested or imprisoned. Racial profiling does not only exist in crime but in our society. People are segregated by race and ethnicity. A certain race may think that they are wealthier than others. They also believe that they have more power and education than other races. This creates a conflict between different races and ethnic groups. Class rank also conflicts when it comes to racial profiling. Upper class ideally has more power than middle and lower class. Thus, resulting in a group conflict. Lower and middle class want equal protection and power. Whites are usually in the higher rank, and blacks are in lower ranks. Stereotypes also fall into the category of racial profiling. When we see someone who is black we automatically assume they are African. When we see someone who is Hispanic we automatically assume their Spanish. When we see an Asian person we automatically assume their Chinese, and when we see a white person we assume their American. It’s the little things like this that are considered racial profiling. Most of us don’t think that it’s bad but someone could take it offensively. Another way we use racial profiling is when we meet people. When you see a nice dressed white male you assume he’s wealthy and intelligent. When you meet a black male, who is not dressed as nicely, you assume he’s a thug, or has dropped out of school. The saying â€Å"Don’t judge a book by its cover† not only works for books but for people as well. The labor laws state that no one should be turned down for a job due to disabilities or their age. Shouldn’t this be the same with race, ethnic, and skin color? In conclusion racial profiling still exists in the United States because we allow it too. It must be stopped, before crimes go up. We should not make decisions off skin color or ethnic backgrounds. We’ve come a long way and everyone should be seen as equals. Even though racial profiling exists in crimes and police stops, we should make an effort to change this. There are other ways to go about making an arrest or sentencing someone to jail. Skin color, ethnic background, and religion should not be factors when deciding to arrest or pull someone over. I believe that if we make an effort to let everyone know that racial profiling is still happening today we can make a difference to prevent it.
